Cook County First Installment Taxes Due March 1, 2022
As a reminder to Cook County homeowners, the due date for first installment property taxes is March 1, 2022. This period of time may cause anxiety for many homeowners in Cook County, Illinois. The attorneys at Morreale, Brady, Malone & Cwik, P.C. are here to break it down for you.
First, it is relevant to note that in Illinois, property taxes are paid in arrears, meaning you pay last years taxes this year. For example, in 2022, you are paying taxes for 2021. The most important aspect to your property tax bill is the amount due. This can be found on the top and bottom left corner of your bill, where it states, “total payment due”. You will also notice your Property Index Number, or “PIN”, next to the amount due, which is specific to your property. Often upon the purchase of property, homeowners establish an escrow account with their lender who receive a copy of the property tax bill and make payments on your behalf. If you are making payments on your own and did not establish an escrow account with your lender, you will want to include the PIN whether the payment is made online, via check or any other prescribed method. To confirm payment methods, we encourage you to visit the Cook County Treasurer’s website at: www.cookcountytreasurer.com.
The first installment is calculated based upon 55% of your total tax bill from the previous year. Any applicable exemptions will be noted on the second installment of your tax bill. To view a copy of your current and past tax bills visit: www.cookcountypropertyinfo.com
